Tata Tea needs big acquisitions
Whoever says that Indian tea has lost its aroma? Tata Tea, the country’s largest tea producer, announced its annual results on June 7 amidst a round of cheer, giving a glimmer of optimism for the tumultuous Indian tea industry. The company saw strong returns with profits after tax at Rs.2.99 billion, 39% higher than the preceding year. Turnover figures stood at Rs.10.4 billion, up by 10%. These financials clearly reflect the strong branded volume growth of the company in India. Tata Tea’s consolidated world wide turnover had as much as 88% contribution from its branded tea operations. Also, the company has maintained reasonable profitability despite higher investments being made towards entering new markets. While Tata Tea’s domestic presence is unquestioned, it’s the global presence that raises a few eyebrows. Despite being the second largest player globally, Tata Tea still needs to find a footing in many markets across the globe. “We are not even present in over 60% of countries where tea is really consumed” pointed out P. T. Siganporia, MD, Tata Tea.
